Potential Landing Spots for the Top Three NBA Free Agents in 2012

Photo: US Presswire - Jim O' Connor
- Adam Parker

The summer of 2012 is upon us, and with it, the start of NBA Free Agency at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

Early on during the regular season, it appeared as everything was in place for the Summer of Dwight [Howard] and Deron [Williams], where they were both likely to wind up on the same team in order to try and compete for a championship.

Fast forward to now, and it's now really only the Summer of Deron, seeing as Dwight (though he now reportedly regrets doing so) decided to forgo the early termination clause in his contract and opted-in for the final year of his contract with the Orlando Magic.

But enough talk about Dwight, seeing as how he's technically not part of this class.

Instead, let's jump right in and talk about D-Will's most likely landing spots.

Five Reasons to Remain a Cleveland Cavaliers Fan

Photo: Josh Gunter - The Plain Dealer
- Troy Ballard

In what can only be explained as heavy drinking and a nasty hangover after watching LeBron James win his first NBA Championship, the Cleveland Cavaliers' front-office has managed to do the impossible once again -- tank another draft.

Unlike last season where the Cavs' were locked in with the first-overall pick and the sure-fire selection of Kyrie Irving, the 2012 NBA Draft threw the team for a loop. It was a rough-ride that involved the biggest reach of the draft and a trade that left everyone wondering just what exactly in the hell is going on in Cleveland.

But to the credit of the Cavs' -- Dion Waiters (or if things don't workout like planned, Dion Floppers), has been compared to Dwyane Wade by numerous scouts. That's something. However, on the note of Tyler Zeller, there's not much of anything to say other than yikes.

With this draft causing a crashing-wave of criticism and an even larger tsunami of frustration, we all need to take a step back and think through how to keep wearing those Cavs' jerseys and flat-brimmed hats.

A Recap of the 2012 NBA Draft -- Along With The Top Three Winners and Losers

Photo: Getty Images
- Adam Parker

The 2012 NBA Draft is now in the books and what a spectacle it was.

Sure, we weren't simultaneously overwhelmed with envy and jealousy like last year while watching the Washington Wizards' first-round pick Jan Vesely burst into a full-on make out session with his stunning blonde Czech girlfriend, Eva Kodouskova, upon being drafted.

But plenty of other interesting things occurred, like ESPN's Heather Cox trying to sell Thomas Robinson's little sister on moving to Sacramento during one of the most awkward on-screen exchanges I've ever seen in my lifetime. Not just because the discussion was awkward, because it was, but the entire conversation was questionable.

It had more to do with the fact that Cox revealed to the millions of viewers that she has no sense of geography whatsoever. Either that, or her definition of 'close' is far different than yours and mine. 400+ miles away from Disneyland isn't 'close' to Disneyland, Heather.

But the best part of the night, and this has become a common theme, is the time when NBA fans in the Prudential Center and all around the world expressed their collective displeasure for NBA commissioner and moonlighting Sith Lord, David Stern. Be honest, no matter whether you were a Lakers fan, a Celtics fan, or any team in between, you were happy to climb aboard the bandwagon of Booooooooo.

Stern appreciates your disdain and maybe even downright hatred for him. In fact, he revels in it.

The climax of the night came when Stern returned to the podium to announce the pick for the NBA Champion Miami Heat -- the always crafty NBA commish was sure to add extra emphasis behind NBA Champion as well, for all of your viewing displeasure.

Stern feeds on the hate like a parasite. The more he's hated, the more his control and lust for more power grows. D.S. appreciates your honesty, as well as your boundless hatred that will continue to fuel his reign.

But enough about that. Let's break down the top three biggest winners and losers in the draft.

The Strategy Behind the NBA Draft -- Science or Myth?

Photo: NBA.com
- Adam Parker

We made it, everyone.

The painstakingly long wait (at least it felt that way for us) for the 2012 NBA Draft is finally over.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you know by now that Kentucky big man -- Anthony "The Brow" Davis -- is a lock to be the consensus first overall pick to the New Orleans Hornets tonight. After that, the draft figures to resemble the series finale of Lost -- questions upon questions.

While we wait for the suspense to end with NBA commissioner David Stern's announcement at the podium, I'd like to discuss the NBA Draft process as a whole - from the pre-draft hype to the war-room stratagems - and why the same teams usually come out as winners once the final pick is announced.

The NBA Draft is unlike any other spectacle in sports. Just imagine this -- Begin with a cluster of young international prospects and college kids becoming instant millionaires on national television. Add thousands of fans on hand at New Jersey's Prudential Center to cheer for what is essentially a glorified livestock auction.

Throw in representatives from thirty teams sitting anxiously in their respective draft “war rooms”, constantly working the phones, and then rushing to hand off their pick to representatives from the NBA before the enormous clock strikes zero. And finally, visualize a never-ending avalanche of in-depth analysis from commentators on gigantic television sets, all talking about the same four or five storylines for close to five hours straight.

All happening in one place. All at the same time. That is the NBA Draft.

Making Sense of Tony Parker's Involvement in the Chris Brown vs. Drake Brawl

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

I suppose that on paper a full blow-out brawl between two rap-stars, their entourages and a Frenchmen with silky-smooth on-court abilities in a New York City nightclub sounds.. badass.

Of course, that is until -- the entire club is destroyed (alright, that's very badass), Chris Brown and Drake have now essentially imploded any chance of ever doing a featured album together (I know they had a beef before this, but I was still hoping) and Tony Parker nearly losing an eye.

And, yes, you can thank me for not using the overused 'all fun and games' line anytime you'd like.

But on a more serious note, Parker was seriously flirting with danger. The All-Star point guard for the San Antonio Spurs was hitting some clubs in NYC like the bachelor that he is, and suddenly found himself in the midst of a full-blown gangsta throw-down.

The Miami Heat -- NBA Champions and New Most Popular Destination for Soon to Be Retirees

Satire

Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Another NBA veteran in his late 30's has expressed interest in joining the Miami Heat next season in pursuit of a championship.

Huh.

I guess the successful championship conquest of 39-year-old NBA journeyman Juwan Howard has begun making the rounds throughout the league.

We here at Beard and Stache obtained a copy of said recruitment letter, which can be read in its entirety below.

The Tale of the Closer -- Baseball's Untamable Stallion

Photo: Getty Images - Leon Halip
- Adam Parker

Ah, the closers. The group of athletes cut from a different cloth; horses of a different color, if you will. No player in the clubhouse faces more scrutiny or is under more pressure on a nightly basis; no players are more outlandish and just down right odd.

I mean, just imagine it. You come in -- cold off the pine and game on the line (though you likely just threw warm-up tosses in the bullpen beforehand) and there's only three outs standing between your team and victory.

Three outs. Three batters. Nine Strikes.

No big deal, right?

If only that were true.

Its Kind of a Sox Thing: Kevin Youkilis and Other Grand Matters

Photo: Keith Allison
- Troy Ballard

Baseball is one of the few sports that allows for fans to become incredibly emotionally attached to players, and those who are privy to the phenomena that is Boston sports will know exactly what I am speaking of.

Most recently, Red Sox fans have had to wave goodbye to one of the few remaining key pieces of the '04 World Series team in Kevin Youkilis.

Youk was not only on a fan favorite in Boston, but was also a leader in the clubhouse for a team that has been bounced by adversity. He was the defacto-of-defacto when representing the grittiness and relentless pursuit of the BoSox.

But in a move that even the most casual baseball fan could read from up and down the east-coast, Youkilis was traded away to the Chicago White Sox (hold the irony jokes off for a few seconds).

The deal involves Boston sending Youkilis and cash considerations (about $5 million) for a utility-man and a pitcher. This was not a move of malice, and it was not to spite Youk. Boston essentially made a trade that benefits all parties equally.

And Then There Were Two -- Only Two Teams Have a Chance to Land Deron Williams

Photo: Getty Images - Chris Chambers

Anyone who had their money on the Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns or Houston Rockets as the favorites to land this off-season's top free agent in Deron Williams should hope they can get their money back.

As it stands, the Deron Williams sweepstakes is already down to a two-horse race. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Saturday night that, while this summer's No. 1 free agent remains "up in the air" about which team he'll ultimately choose, Williams already has made the decision to narrow his list of potential suitors to two franchises.

The two contenders?

Williams' current team -- the Brooklyn Nets and his 'hometown' team -- the Dallas Mavericks.

How Bountygate Has Become a Joke

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

Allow me to clarify something -- the allegations against the New Orleans Saints for involvement in a bounty system is of the upmost seriousness. By no means do I intend to downgrade or disregard what happened in New Orleans. Player safety should be a top priority in the NFL, and these sort of allegations deserve the sort of attention it has received.

With that being said -- Roger Goodell, the players allegedly involved and the NFLPA have turned Bountygate into a total and complete joke.

And this isn't even the kind of joke that you bust out laughing over. Not even the kind of joke that garners a chuckle or snort. We're talking about a total mockery of the system and a blatant lack of respect from everyone involved.

As the earth-shattering news was released of the laundry-list of offenses and personnel involved, the NFL fan-base was stuck in shock. It seemed almost improbable, and every major media outlet pushed entire segments talking and discussing what it meant and what was to happen moving forward.

When Roger Goodell announced the punishment for those involved in Bountygate -- another wave of shock hit. Greg Williams -- banished from the NFL. Sean Payton -- gone for an entire season. Jonathan Vilma -- suspended for the entire season. Others less involved -- a wide range of suspensions.

Then.. the appeal process.

2012 NBA Mock Draft: Beard and Stache Edition

Well, there you have it, folks.

Another season is in the books, with the Miami Heat winning the NBA title and LeBron James finally getting that long sought after championship after nine years in the league.

Now that the playoff extravaganza has ended, focus now shifts fully to the NBA Draft, where teams will be looking to add the stars of tomorrow to help their squads take the next step.

We here at Beard and Stache have been as anxious as a kid the night before Christmas about this year's draft, and we're glad to once again be bringing you our very own mock draft.

Thoughts on the Miami Heat Winning the 2012 NBA Championship

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

Let it all out.

Some are jumping in excitement and yelling with pride, a great many others are frowning and swearing in disappointment. Regardless of personal affiliation, the Miami Heat have defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the 2012 NBA Finals.

Game Five ended with Miami taking a commanding lead over the Thunder and coasting to victory in the fourth. Although different from other games in the series, it was still riveting from start to finish.

Here are some quick thoughts from the game:

LeBron, LeBron, LeBron..

Love him, hate him -- LeBron James was phenomenal.

He deserved to win this more than any other player in the NBA, and despite the massive amount of criticism surrounding him, LBJ was able to dominate and capture the most elusive thing in his career. His performance throughout the entire series was to note with the greatest in history, and his MVP nomination was sure-fire.

Congrats, LeBron. You earned it.

OKC!

I don't want to insult or take anything away from the Thunder. So I won't.

OKC is such a young team, and as a whole, played very well through this entire series. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were amazing and deserve immense credit for leading a revolution in the Western Conference.

Congrats, OKC.

Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers and Shane Battier!

LBJ was excellent, but almost every other player on the Heat's roster contributed to this series. This was a team effort, and the players mentioned above were key pieces to the success of Miami in winning the championship.

Game Five was an explosion for Miller (7 three's!), and through the entire series Battier was playing on another level. These two proved that it does take a team to win, not just superstars.

Wade and Bosh finally found themselves and ended up making a major impact throughout the entire series. These two picked up the slack, and were totally key in jumping over that Finals barrier.

Game Five Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Miami Heat -- NBA Finals

Photo Design: JC Leonardo
- Adam Parker

The day has finally arrived.

The day where 'the King' will finally get his ring, or the Oklahoma City Thunder will force the series to be finished back in OKC, where they're 9-1 in these playoffs.

I can't imagine Miami Heat star LeBron James slept very soundly last night. Anyone participating this game who did get any sleep last night deserves truckloads of credit for their strong will and resilience, because if it were me, I'd be far too anxious to sleep.

If I was with the Heat, I'd have a similar feeling to that of a kid anxiously awaiting Christmas morning where every minute feels like an hour.

If I was with the Thunder, I'd likely have a sleepless night for far different reasons. 'Hey, coach [Scott] Brooks, any chance I can take some game film back to my hotel room with me?'

Needless to say, I would be spending every waking moment combing over every inch of the previous games in the series to see if there's something, anything that I can do better to force this series back to OKC and keep hope alive.

Oh, and somewhere in between all that film study, I can 100 percent guarantee that I cursed the air about the absolutely horrendous officiating job that's occurred in these Finals.

But as every one of us is likely almost as anxious as the players for Game Five to commence, we here at Beard and Stache would like to offer a quick preview to hold you over until tonight's tipoff.

The NBA Pre-Draft Trade Frenzy Has Officially Begun

Photo: Getty Images - Fernando Medina
- Troy Ballard

It didn't take long, and it was two teams that would be expected to make a move, with the Washington Wizards and New Orleans Hornets orchestrating a multi-player and pick trade before the start of the NBA Draft next week.

In what will likely go down as the greatest miracle of all-time in basketball (or quite possibly any sport), the Wizards were able to shed themselves of the worst contract known to man with Rashard Lewis, whilst at the same time getting decent value back with another center in Emeka Okafor and a young forward in Trevor Ariza.

The final deal is: Lewis and Washington's second-round draft selection (No. 46 overall) for Okafor and Ariza.

Overall, it was a solid deal for both sides, as New Orleans was able to clear the way for The Brow at center, make a move to free-up some bogged down minutes by dealing away Ariza and also adding to a solid collection of draft picks. For the Wizards, adding another big man in Okafor for depth and an athletic player to flank John Wall certainly helps an otherwise flat roster. The only one who really loses-out in this deal (if it could be considered that) is Lewis -- who will be having his contract bought-out by the two sides.

This move may not shatter anyone's season, but it did mark the beginning of something wild -- the pre-draft NBA trade frenzy.

Plaxico Burress Wants to Play For The Carolina Panthers

Photo: US Presswire
- Adam Parker

Free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress is in the news again, though thankfully, this time it only pertains to football reasons.

The 34-year-old wideout has expressed interest in teaming up with Cam Newton and Steve Smith to play for the Carolina Panthers in 2012.

Burress said in a radio interview earlier this week that “no doubt about it,” he wants to play for the Panthers next season. However, thus far the interest doesn't seem to be mutual. While Burress has fielded phone calls from other NFC South teams, the Panthers have yet to show up on his caller ID, he told WFNZ-AM in Charlotte on Monday.

Burress wasn't shy in continue to show his 'giddiness' to come to Carolina. He cited the importance of getting to be close to his family as well as throwing some major love Cam-Cam's and Smith's way.

Game Four Recap: Miami Heat Roll to a 3-1 Series Lead Over the OKC Thunder

Photo: Getty Images - Mike Ehrmann
- Troy Ballard

I have one thing to say before I delve into the game: easily, in my lifetime, the most intriguing and relentless NBA Finals played.

The Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder are the perfect combination. It's the mix of flashy superstars, sprinkled with effective role players and enough motivation and desire to push each other to new heights. The games are electric from start to finish, and if not for the end result of Game Four, I'd say this would be an easy seven-game run.

But, as most know who are reading this, the Heat rolled to a 104-98 victory, and much more importantly -- a 3-1 series lead over the Thunder. With one game still remaining in Miami, things have taken a sudden and radical turn in what was once thought of as a lock to go back to Oklahoma City.

Here are some quick thoughts from the game:

LeBron James 'Cramp-Game'

LBJ had another phenomenal game -- no surprise at this point. However, there are going to be comparisons to Michael Jordan's infamous and legendary flu game, as in the late-fourth James went down and had a wicked leg cramp.

Despite hobbling around and dropping multiple profanities on live television, James still was able to knock-down a late three that ultimately iced the game. Not only that, but he was just as agressive and effective on defense with the cramp as he was before it.

I love LBJ, and he deserves mad props for a killer game (only one rebound shy of a trip-dub) and for playing through an injury -- but to compare this to Jordan's game is an insult.

Is Russell Westbrook Really Da Guy in OKC?

I will be the first to admit -- I don't like Russell Westbrook. There is a plethora of reasons why, and if I were to list them now, after a nasty 43-point performance, I would look crazy. That being said, looking at Westbrook's game, there's nothing to complain about.

Aside from totally having no in-game awareness and fouling Mario Chalmers with an expiring shot clock, Westbrook was perfect. Any claims that had been made about his lack of consistency in key moments faded, as it seemed every shot the kid took went in.

He was the definition of automatic.

OKC has had problems with Kevin Durant not taking over games, and it looks like in his absence, Westbrook just took over.

Game Four Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Miami Heat -- NBA Finals

Game Four of the NBA Finals matchup between the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder resumes tonight.

Two teams going toe-to-toe in a battle royale to earn some nice gold trinkets commonly known as the Larry O' Brien trophy and of course, their own championship rings that half of the winning players will either have auctioned off on eBay or sold elsewhere with all proceeds going to charity.

Let's be honest. The trophy and rings are nice, but isn't it really all about the bragging rights? Isn't being able to announce to your rivals and the rest of the world that you're the best of the best and used them as proverbial stepping stones on your way to the NBA summit?

Sounds good to me.

Ah, who am I kidding? Of course, it's about the jewelry as well!

Now, onto the preview for Game Four!

We Should Have Known: The New York Yankees Dominance Isn't a Surprise

Photo: Getty Images

It's so easy, New York. Isn't it?

When was the last time anyone has sat down and watched a Yankees' game and thought sincerely to themselves -- wow, this team really blows. Because I have been tossing that exact same idea around for the past few hours, and I have no real answer.

Because never in my (albeit relatively short) lifetime have the New York Yankees been a bad team. Sure, I've watched NY tank on a scale of massive proportions in key games -- but really, really suck.. nope.

Being a Philadelphia Phillies fan, all I can do is sit and watch in frustration as New York has eclipsed another notable achievement -- winning 10 consecutive games.

Future Hall of Fame Running Back LaDainian Tomlinson Retires -- As a Member of the San Diego Chargers

LT to Retire a Charger

The day has finally arrived.

The brilliant playing career of LaDainian Tomlinson has come full circle, as 'LT' makes his ceremonious return to the place where it all began to announce his retirement from the National Football League.

The Chargers said Sunday that Tomlinson, who was the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2006 with San Diego and is the fifth-leading rusher in league history, will re-sign with the team today and then immediately announce his retirement.

Tomlinson was drafted fifth overall in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and his stellar play quickly elevated him to become one of the biggest stars in team history, helping revive the Chargers after the devastating Ryan Leaf hangover and turning them into a perennial force in the AFC West. He would go on to spend the first nine years of his career in San Diego before finishing out his final two seasons as a member of the New York Jets.

Game Three Recap: OKC Falters in Miami as Heat Snag a 2-1 Series Lead

And.. LeBron moves one step closer.

For those who didn't watch the heavy-weight Game Three bout that took place in Miami between the Heat and Thunder -- you missed out. It was another game where the stars of each team were enough to power an entire state (in this case Florida) for the next decade.

Here are some quick thoughts from the Heat's 91-85 Game Three win over the Thunder:

LBJ is No Joke

As if it was a laughing matter before, it certainly isn't now. LeBron James is on a mission, and he is destroying anything in his path with wicked jams, clutch threes and stifling defense. He has an entirely new attitude and it's showing every single minute he's on the court.

Kevin Durant *May Be The Best Player in the NBA

Not much else to say other than the fact that this kid is just unstoppable. He shines in the brightest of lights and is a catalyst to this young Thunder team, which almost pulled the impossible late-comeback for the third straight game.

The only reason there's an * -- LBJ.

The Battier Strikes Again

Unreal. 100% shooting tonight for Shane Battier. This dude wants it.

Game Three Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Miami Heat -- NBA Finals

The wait is finally over, everyone.

If you had any plans for tonight, cancel them.

Were you planning to let some friends drag you to some underground club? Time to feign an illness. Again.

Is your significant other trying to haul you (likely kicking and screaming) to some company 'event' where he or she can show you off as arm candy to all of the co-workers who on the outside they love spending time with, but inside are as annoyed as one would be if listening to an endless symphony of nails on a chalkboard? Tell your significant other that they're going to have to fly solo.

The NBA Finals -- the battle royale between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat -- returns tonight.

While you're coming up with that excuse you're going to use so you can stay in tonight and watch 'Where Amazing Happens', let's take a look at some of the keys for Game Three.

Derrick Rose or Russell Westbrook -- Who Would Be Your Starting Point Guard?

Photo: Getty Images
- Adam Parker

The NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder are in full swing with the series tied at one game a piece.

In all honesty, this series has boasted, at least for me, some of the best basketball I have ever watched in my life to date.

Naturally, the bulk of the spotlight centers on the LeBron James and Kevin Durant duel with cameo appearances from Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and.. wait for it.. Shane Battier.

But while we wait for the series to resume this coming Sunday, I had a quick thought after watching Westbrook's exploits in particular.

If I were in an NBA front office, who would I rather have as my point guard if I were starting a team -- Rose or Westbrook?

Game Two Recap: Miami Heat Even Series 1-1 in Fourth Quarter Thriller Against the Oklahoma City Thunder

Photo: Getty Images - Mike Ehrman

- Troy Ballard

This series -- whoa.

There was plenty of 'that never happened before' moments in Game Two: OKC losing at home for the first time this postseason, LeBron James knocking down multiple clutch-shots and free-throws in the late fourth, Kevin Durant not getting a foul call, Serge Ibaka developing an offensive game and the list goes on.

In what will go down as possibly the most exciting game of the series, the Miami Heat went wire to wire and escaped Oklahoma City, despite a tough and strong Thunder comeback, to even the series 1-1 with a narrow 100-96 victory.

Here are some quick thoughts from the game:

Shane MoFo Battier is ON FIRE!

Listen, if someone would have told me that Shane Battier would explode for 17 points in the first two games of the NBA Finals -- I would have laughed. But, Battier's play has been no laughing matter as the former Duke killer has turned back Father Time and has dominated from beyond the arc.

Not only has his offense been stunning, but he has been extremely tough on defense. Battier has been an essential part of the Heat's success, and if he can keep this run going, Oklahoma City is in trouble.

Kevin Durant -- Monster. Russell Westbrook -- Mini-Monster. James Harden -- Beard.

The Thunder may have dropped Game Two, but OKC's Big Three were dynamite.

81 total points between the three of them. 81 of 96 total points. Yowza.

Durant was more clutch (forget being in foul trouble the entire game) as that pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson, Westbrook started off slow but picked it up and turned into a scoring machine in the second half and Harden rebounded perfectly from Game One and was his typical self.

Not only are these three amazing together as teammates, but it's like watching a highlight reel on every single offensive possession.

Chris Bosh, You Don't Say!

I ripped Chris Bosh after Game One. He didn't show good effort on defense, made poor offensive decisions and his rebounding was abysmal. He must have thought the same thing.

Game Two was one of the most impressive performances I have seen from Bosh since he has been in Miami. His offensive performance wasn't mind-blowing, but everything else from his seven offensive rebounds to the excellent hustle on loose balls made him look like he was back at Georgia Tech.

This is the kind of Bosh that Miami needs to continue to win in this series -- not the half-Bosh that has been banned to the confines Jurassic Park.

Okay, everyone.

We've had our one day off from the 2012 NBA Finals. We've had the time analyze, scrutinize and over-analyze every inch of Game One.

Now, we're mere hours away from Game Two between the visiting Miami Heat and the host Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Game One received the highest ratings ever for an NBA Finals game shown on ABC, so congrats to the network on reeling in this cash cow.

Yes sirree, the match-up between the Thunder and Heat is definitely one for the ages, and it centers on the continuation of the marquee bout between Miami's LeBron James and OKC's Kevin Durant.

But enough of that, let's get some quick thoughts on Game Two.

Jim Rome vs. David Stern: Who's in the Wrong?

Photo: AP Images
- Troy Ballard

If you haven't heard it yet -- you better check it out.

As a guest on a radio interview with Jim Rome, NBA commissioner David Stern was pressed about the possibility of fixing the NBA Lottery in favor of the New Orleans Hornets.

And.. things blew up.

(You can listen to audio of the exchange here, or read ESPN's transcript of the conversation here)!

In essence, Rome asked the commissioner in a very straightforward manner if the NBA Lottery was fixed in favor of the Hornets, and also about how he has responded to the speculation. After the question was asked, Stern was quiet for a few moments and gave a mature response that included the phrase 'shame on you.'

But after that, things spiraled and Rome and Stern were involved in a metaphorical fist-fight.

Adam 'Pacman' Jones Expected to Speak at 2012 NFL Rookie Symposium

Photo: Getty Images
- Adam Parker

Well, count me as one of many who are surprised by this odd choice.

The Cincinnati Bengals cornerback was asked by the NFL to be the speaker at the rookie symposium, which is scheduled for next week in Ohio.

Why would the NFL ask Adam 'Pacman' Jones, the player who has arguably become the poster child for what not to do off the field to speak to the impressionable-minded rookies?

I'm completely bewildered.

Maybe the NFL knows something we don't? Actually, rephrase that; because I'm sure the league knows multiple things about any number of topics that we don't.

But why do this? Why not bring in someone like a Ray Lewis or even the recently retired Hines Ward to come speak to this year's new crop of rookies? Wouldn't that make more sense?

After all, Lewis and Ward are model citizens off the field and were extremely hard workers on it.

I'm having a hard time believing that the league handpicked 'Pacman' Jones for the job. Do they want someone who will actually help guide the rookies down the right path or someone who's going to teach them how to make it rain?

But like I said earlier, the league obviously knows something we don't.

Game One Recap: OKC Thunder Explode in Second Half to Take Down the Miami Heat

Photo: Getty Images - Garrett Ellwood
- Troy Ballard

I don't want to call anything too early -- but off the surface, the Oklahoma City Thunder look damn good.

Despite a red-hot start by the Miami Heat in the first half that included not only enough three's to sink a ship, but also a sizable lead -- in typical Thunder fashion -- Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook rallied the troops and stole the show after halftime.

The combo of Durant and Westbrook was dynamite, and when those two started to dial it up, the rest of the team fell into place.

In the end, Oklahoma City secured a Game One win at home with a final score of 105-94.

Here are a few quick thoughts from the game:

Nick Collison - Unsung Hero Extraordinaire!

If anyone was saying that they were thinking going into this game that Nick Collison was the lone pick as the x-factor player -- it's a lie. But, without taking away too much credit, Collison did explode against Miami and was actually, believe it or not, a key cog to the team's success.

With the minutes he played, he was not only agressive on defense but also was the definition of glass eater supreme (securing several timely offensive rebounds, five of them to be exact), and was also quite handy on dump-off passes for easy dunks.

I would have never pegged Collison as the deal breaker in a game like this -- but something new happens every day, right?

Okay, Chris Bosh, Seriously?

Listen, I understand totally that Chris Bosh is still feeling ill-effects from his strained abdomen. It must be totally painful to play through. But after the rocking performance he had in the Eastern Conference Finals, I have no idea what changed in this game.

Not only was Bosh almost entirely ineffective on defense, but his offensive game was just miserable. I would also be a fool not to mention that Bosh (even with his hot three-point shooting streak in mind) took three deep shots from beyond the arc.

I can totally respect a player who is playing through an injury, but Bosh's performance in this game was abysmal and was a liability on Miami's offense and defense.

Game One Preview: Miami Heat vs. Oklahoma City Thunder -- NBA Finals

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

After a three-day break (one that felt like an entire off-season) the 2012 NBA Finals have officially arrived!

The dreamy basketball match-up of the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder is now just moments away from tip-off. Although some basketball fans are disgruntled that the combined awesomeness of James and Durant will likely cause the world to end, what are you going to do?

Here are some quick thoughts for Game One:

Can Anyone on the Heat Guard Russell Westbrook?

Yes -- LeBron James. But, the issue with that is the Thunder still have some guy named Durant.

Mario Chalmers is a wildcard. Dwyane Wade is going to be pre-occupied with The Beard in James Harden. And the Heat's best bet is going to hope that a team-oriented defense can slow down Westbrook, with moderate support from Chalmers.

Even though I don't dig Westbrook -- I fully expect him to have a big game.

Which LeBron James are we going to see?

Even though LBJ has been an absolute monster this postseason, there is always the chance (Cleveland fans would say guarantee) that he struggles and kind of.. well.. sucks. We all watched it last year.

I don't think after watching James through that Boston series that there is much of a chance that he will totally drop the ball, but anything is possible. In the situation that The King fails to get off the bus, Miami would be wise to feed Wade the ball and hope he can dial it up.

James Harden -- Heat Killer!

This has been the question that has been eating away at my soul over the past 48 hours -- what can we expect from Harden? Is it going to be the typical slasher/three point deadeye that we have witnessed this entire season, or will he totally tank under the pressure of the Finals?

Here's the deal, if Harden and his beard are red-hot like they've been this entire postseason, I fully expect to have this guy be the deal breaker of the entire series. We're talking about a dude that can score 30 a night off the bench, against a tired Wade.

Big trouble in little China town for the Heat? I'd think so.

The Jacksonville Jaguars Need to Re-Work Maurice Jones-Drew's Contract -- Now!

- Troy Ballard

No one look now, but the Jacksonville Jaguars are playing with fire.

Or, possibly even worse than that. The Jags' are flirting with danger, poking the bear, neglecting the massive storm clouds hovering ahead, eagerly pressing that big red shiny button and allowing the worst possible case scenario to unfold right before the team with total arrogance.

As of this moment, Jacksonville has no intention of re-working Maurice Jones-Drew's current contract. This bold news is coming despite the sure-fire lock of a Pro-Bowl running back adamantly stating that he wants to amend (or extend is the better word) his current deal.

MJD is coming off a career year in which he led the NFL in rushing, was essentially the entire offense in Jacksonville and established himself (if there was any doubt before) as the top running back in the NFL.

With two-years remaining on his current contract, one in which he is being severely underpaid in comparison to other top backs around the league, MJD is hoping to not only get a bigger pay day, but also lock himself in as the future in Jacksonville.

And.. the Jaguars' front office is putting the kabosh on it.

Five Things Each NBA Draft Lottery Team Needs to Do: Part 12 -- Houston Rockets

This is part twelve of a twelve-part installment of a Beard and Stache special where we'll be breaking down the top things that each lottery team needs to accomplish this offseason in order to improve heading into the 2012-13 campaign.

This is the final daily update to the series with a new team in advance of our soon-to-be released Beard and Stache NBA Mock Draft.

We covered the Phoenix Suns in yesterday's edition, which can be found here.

We leave Phoenix in the rear-view mirror and head to Texas, where the focus will be on a team who also just missed out on the playoffs and therefore was in the NBA Draft Lottery as the fourteenth and final team -- the Houston Rockets.

Don't call it a comeback.

Because, after all, when looking over the numbers, Marshawn Lynch was equally as good in Buffalo as he has been in Seattle.

Sure, last season could easily be called a breakout year, with Lynch making his second Pro-Bowl, scoring 12 touchdowns and racking up 1,204 yards on the ground. But he had two consecutive 1,000 yard seasons after being drafted with the Bills, and he even posted similar touchdown numbers.

Surprised?

It's a strange phenomena in the NFL, and it doesn't happen often, but Lynch was caught in the middle of it. There's a reason why he wasn't getting top running back recognition before, despite mostly solid numbers -- he was a punk.

We covered the Milwaukee Bucks in yesterday's edition, which can be found here.

Today, we leave the cold confines of Milwaukee and head due south to the Arizona desert to discuss a team that's staring down the barrel of one of it's most pivotal off-seasons to date -- my team, the Phoenix Suns.

The Reality of LeBron James

It took seven games -- but for the second consecutive year, LeBron James and the Miami Heat are headed to the NBA Finals.

As expected from the MVP, James displayed a dominating performance en-route to finishing off the Boston Celtics. But it would be improper to not mention the stunning play of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh -- both of which dazzled in Game Seven in ways that surprised even the most well-versed NBA fans.

And despite the unbelievable play of Rajon Rondo, the sudden emergence of Brandon Bass and Kevin Garnett playing like he was 25, the Heat managed to bust-up a tough and dedicated Celtics squad.

In fact, I was so impressed with how this Boston team was playing earlier in the series, I wrote a piece titled: The Reality of the Boston Celtics (which can be found here).

It was a post that reflected my true feelings towards the Celtics, and now, I feel compelled to do the very same for James and the Heat. Consider this a rebuttal to my own opinions, or take it as many will -- a preemptive breakdown of what has, and will happen moving forward.

Chad Ochocinco's Release from New England Signals the End of an Era

It was a good run, old buddy.

I'd have to imagine that is something like what Chad Ochocinco said to himself after he was notified by the New England Patriots of his release.

It's not a surprising move by New England, which has enough wide receiver depth to sink a ship -- and even less of a shock given Ochocinco's totally ineffective 2011 campaign with the team.

His lack of success has been called everything from an emotional issue, to failing to understand the complexities of the Bill Belichick offense and even that the six-time Pro-Bowler is simply washed-up.

But whatever the reason for his rapid decline to production -- Chad Javon Johnson-Ochocinco's release signals the end of an era.

The Reality of the Boston Celtics

Photo: AP Images
- Troy Ballard

Upon the Boston Celtics overcoming yet another improbable win over the Miami Heat to take a 3-2 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, I listened to Kevin Garnett drop some serious bombs.

I'm not talking the kind of bombs that make the average fan and joe-blow sit back and say 'whoa -- did he really just say that?' No, not quite. I'm talking about the kind of comments that have been true longer than we would like to admit, but it just takes a bold showing to pull away that veil of denial to expose the truth.

With Garnett craning over like he was talking to a child, Doris Burke asked him a series of questions after the game to which he gave responses -- all of which were true. Comments about playing together as a team, proving naysayers wrong, being a professional and working on craft, owners that talked too much and my personal favorite -- "I was thinking oh God, The Truth!"

There was a time when this ECF series tipped-off people had a sense Miami would walk to the Finals. The Celtics may put up a fight at home and win at least one, but for the most part, the Heat had too much talent and it would be an easy series. "This series is more a formality than anything..," I saw one Heat fan tweet out.

Instead, game six is scheduled to be a throw-down in Boston, the tides have totally turned and really for the first time this season, the Heat are at risk of being eliminated.

That's the reality of the Boston Celtics.

Quick Impressions of the NCAA 13 Demo

Photo: EA Sports
- Troy Ballard

Grab onto something and hold tight, everyone.

The newest teaser of NCAA 13 has been released to the masses -- that's right, even you can get it! -- with the launch of this year's demo on the PS3 and Xbox 360. For practical purposes, I downloaded the demo on the 360 as the time was cut drastically thanks to the $90+ smackers I schell out to get faster speeds and a stronger online performance.

With that in mind, even those on the PS3 can still get a taste as the gameplay is essentially the same.

And.. yes.. the gameplay was as good as advertised.

But before I delve into my thoughts on the demo, I'd like to start off with a quick foreword:

When the NCAA 12 demo released, we here at Beard and Stache were pumped. Both Adam and myself were totally sold that EA Sports (I know, foolish as it may be) had actually fixed and patched any issue that may have lingered in the past.

Of course, anyone who played last year's edition for any extended amount of time learned that the game, although very polished, had several major flaws that were easy to overlook on first glance. Things like Online Dynasty servers crashing, linebackers jumping out of the gym to snag interceptions and swat balls away, psychic cornerbacks and the ever-dreaded basket catch.

With all the above listed discrepancies that caused an immense amount of frustration -- here are some quick thoughts on the demo:

Oh, Yes, the Passing is Silky Smooth

EA Sports promised that the entire passing structure had been re-tooled and greatly improved from year's past with a plethora of new animations, a smoother drop-back and a more realistic trajectory system -- and they delivered.

On every single drop back and roll-out I felt totally in control, and for the first time in any EA Sports game to date, I felt totally comfortable in the pocket. The collection of new animations were flawless and accurate with seamless movement.

When passing the ball, quarterbacks no longer just lob balls carelessly on short passes and throw bullets on fade routes, but instead throw the correct type of pass for the situation. Although it may be difficult to imagine, when playing in game, it works as designed.

We covered the Cleveland Cavaliers in yesterday's edition, which can be found here.

We now migrate from Sacramento, California to Portland, Oregon to dive into a team that goes through more general managers than Greg Oden undergoes surgeries -- the Portland Trail Blazers.

Congratulations to Carlos Correa and the Houston Astros!

Photo: AP Images
- Troy Ballard

The last time Houston had a first round pick, the team elected to pass on Derek Jeter and selected Phil Nevin instead -- the Astros learned from the mistake and drafted the explosive shortstop Carlos Correa with no sure-fire safe pick on the table.

Despite being relatively quiet going into the draft, Correa is certainly not lacking praise from scouts and coaches alike. One scout in the AL went as far to claim that he is 'like A-Rod.'

Keep in mind -- this kid is 17-years-old.

Possibly more impressive than being the next Alex Rodriguez with a clean slate, is that Correa is the highest overall player drafted from Puerto Rico in MLB history. With his selection he was able to jump past Ramon Castro, a Puerto Rican countryman that was also drafted by Houston that previously held the position with his 17th overall selection in 1994.

For Houston, the team has continued a massive youth movement overhaul to re-energize and re-tool a deflated roster.

And Correa is a great place to start.

The Minnesota Vikings Need a Back-Up Plan for Adrian Peterson

Photo: AP Images - Andy King
- Troy Ballard

Adrian Peterson may be a human cyborg that seems to never stop working -- despite a torn ACL -- but even with his robotic mastery, he may not be fully recovered at the beginning of the 2012 season.

Without Peterson in the fold of the Minnesota Vikings' backfield on opening day, things could get potentially sticky. We all witnessed what happened after AP went down and Christian Ponder was left to his own devices -- Minnesota finished with the third worst record in the NFL.

However, the good news is that, as mentioned before, Peterson is making unheard of strides to recovery given the extent of his injury. His plan all along has been to be ready to rock and roll on opening day, but that may be either denial or his own ego talking -- whichever you prefer.

In the case that Peterson doesn't return to the starting lineup on day one, are the Vikings prepared to move forward without him for at least part of the season, and is there anyone on the roster that can step up and fill his role?
