Five Things Each NBA Draft Lottery Team Needs to Do: Part 1 -- New Orleans Hornets

Photo: Getty Images - Jesse D. Garrabrant
- Adam Parker

This is part one of a twelve-part installment of a Beard and Stache special where we'll be breaking down the top things that each lottery team needs to accomplish this offseason in order to improve heading into the 2012-13 campaign.

We'll update the series daily with a new team in advance of our soon-to-be released Beard and Stache NBA Mock Draft.

We begin with the New Orleans Hornets, the team who beat the odds and won the rights to the top overall pick in the NBA Draft taking place on June 28th.

It's awful funny how this one worked out.

For the conspiracy theorists out there, the outcome of the NBA Draft Lottery couldn't have turned out better. This proves once and for all that David Stern has his hand in the cookie jar and fixes these things every year.

Okay, probably not, but you get the point.

Here we go!

Asante Samuel Making Waves at OTAs - Do the Atlanta Falcons Now Have the Best Secondary in the NFL?

Photo: AP Images - David Goldman
- Troy Ballard

Asante Samuel has always brought a certain amount of hype and noise to wherever he goes -- the Patriots, Eagles, Little Wayne's B-Day party -- and the trend has continued as Pick-Six has managed to raise some eyebrows with the Atlanta Falcons during the team's voluntary training camp.

During the practice, Samuel went as far as to claim that he was bored and that he 'wanted some action.' After calling for the ball to be passed his way, he snagged two interceptions -- one against Matty-Ice.

Despite being filled to the brim with enough swagger to sink a ship, Samuel still managed to impress all of his teammates. Ryan, who received the royal treatment from Pick-Six after throwing a careless pass in his direction, had the highest amount of praise for the new arrival.

With what appears to be a smooth transition from Philadelphia to Atlanta for Samuel, the question has been raised -- do the Falcons now have the best secondary in the NFL?

The Rich Get Richer -- Free Agent Pitcher Roy Oswalt Signs With Texas Rangers

Photo: Getty Images - Len Redkoles

The rich get richer.

It's a phrase many baseball fans have reserved to use when discussing perennial powerhouses like the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.

But this time around, it's the Texas Rangers, not the usual Big Three, who will get to have its cake and eat it too.

The Rangers and free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt have agreed to terms on a one year, $5 million contract. The Rangers brought in the veteran right-hander to help offset the loss of Neftali Feliz, who recently went on the disabled list because of a sprained right elbow.

The 34-year-old had other suitors, including the Red Sox, Orioles, Dodgers, Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. All the clubs made various offers, some even more lucrative than that of the Rangers, sources told ESPN's Karl Ravech.

Quick Thoughts: Spurs Take 2-0 Lead Over OKC Thunder

Photo: AP Images - Robert Gray

Yowza.

Listen, I think we all knew that the San Antonio Spurs were good -- but this good?

San Antonio demolished OKC -- at one point leading by 22 -- en route to the a speedy 2-0 series lead. And yes, for those keeping track at home, this lastest triumph also pushes the Spurs to a 20th consecutive win.

When Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli are playing like a bunch of college kids playing for Coach Cal at Kentucky, there's really not much that can be done. Not only was the trio in San Antonio spectacular in all facets of the game, but each had enough highlight plays to fill the Sportscenter Top 10 for the next week.

Kevin Durant was able to snap his team into attention in the fourth (otherwise known as intentionally fouling Tiago Splitter), and despite being within six at one point, the chances of a comeback were still incredibly far out of reach.

Patriots Cornerback Devin McCourty Must Have a Rebound Season in 2012

Photo: US Presswire
- Adam Parker

When the New England Patriots selected former Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Bill Belichick and co. believed he would be the face and de facto savior for what was (and still is) a deplorable Patriots secondary.

After being thrust into the starting lineup as a rookie when veteran Leigh Bodden was lost to injury, McCourty did not disappoint.

Starting all 16 games, McCourty tallied an impressive 82 tackles, seven interceptions, two forced fumbles and 17 passes defensed. His efforts garnered him Pro-Bowl honors and a Second Team All-Pro selection. Not only that, but he was the only other defensive rookie to receive votes (2 out of 50) for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award besides eventual winner Ndamukong Suh.

Things seemed to be looking up for McCourty, and the sky appeared to be the limit for the young defensive back -- another gem of a draft choice by Belichick, and another feather in the cap for old BB.

Or, at least that appeared to be the case -- until McCourty's 2011 season.

Three NFL Teams We Want to See on HBO's Hard Knocks!

Photo: Bloguin.com

Who is starting to miss the Rex Ryan's profanity-laced entrances and snide remarks at just about anyone who tries to talk to him?

Not this guy. Well, maybe just a little.

But one thing is for sure -- I am missing HBO's Hard Knocks. Getting the inside scoop on what happens during an NFL training camp is not only excellent television, but also is great for making jokes at the expense of whatever player or coach happens to be embarrassing themselves.

Surprisingly, the show has not found that much success trying to find another suitor outside of New York (the show and Rex are destined to be together), with several NFL teams turning HBO down straight-up.  However, the series has given themselves a priority deadline of June 1 of finding an organization to film Hard Knocks -- meaning that the next team could be chosen at any second.

Here are three teams that the Beard and Stache would love to see on the next season of Hard Knocks!

#3. Dallas Cowboys

Oh, this could be a dream come true.

Think of Jerry Jones meddling in front of the camera and dominating screen time like some sort of reality show star. It would be beyond comical to see Papa Jerry out on the field in his $60,000 suit yelling commands like a drill sergeant, all the while trying to justify why he is doing Jason Garrett's job for him.

Not to mention, we would all get a good look at Tony Romo's newest wife (he's been married before, right?). Supposedly, she's pretty hot stuff. And if I am not mistaken, Dez Bryant has been known to play the field -- so that could get good really quick.

Truth is, Jones and the Cowboys are built for Hard Knocks.

Gio Gonzalez Has Been Nothing Short of Amazing for the Washington Nationals!

Photo: Getty Images/Kevin C. Cox
- Adam Parker

Who would've thunk it?

The Washington Nationals are currently the top dogs in the National League East -- a division that also boasts the perennially strong Philadelphia Phillies, an improving Atlanta Braves squad, a red-hot New York Mets club and the new look (and much-improved) Miami Marlins.

But yet, with just under 50 games in the books, the Nationals are the toast of division, leading the surprising Mets by 2.5 games.

How are the Nats' doing this, you ask?

Look no further than young ace Gio Gonzalez, who has been a huge contributing factor in the team's success thus far.

Five Moves the Philadelphia 76ers Need to Make This Off-Season

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

It was a helluva run, Philadelphia.

To think that this 76ers team managed to sneak by a Derrick Rose-less Chicago Bulls team in the first round, then take a much more talented Boston Celtics team to seven-games and nearly pull the impossible is nothing to scoff at.

Doug Collins totally flipped a team that was lost and without an identity and turned them into a hard to beat, team-basketball minded and defensive savvy squad.

But regardless of the improbable run and improvement the Sixers made -- change is imminent.

Moving forward, Philadelphia is going to have to plan and build for the future while still maintaining the ability to contend. More than half the team is on expiring deals, and Philadelphia likely won't be too spend-happy with re-signings in house. With that being said, expect big changes all around at nearly every position.

Here are five moves the Sixers need to make this off-season:

#5. Use the amnesty clause on Elton Brand

Listen, I love Elton Brand. The guy took on a much needed leadership role in Philadelphia (going as far as to rally the entire group during the lockout to practice together), and for the most part was the very beating heart of the team.

He played through enough alignments to make a doctor cringe, and was a consistent scorer and defender throughout the entire year. Brand carried this team, and for the most part was the key cog in Philadelphia's long-term success this season. The idea of letting him go is nauseating as a fan.

But the blunt reality is that Brand is making an alarming $18 million next season. That's more than any other player on the team, and it's a lot of money that could be spent elsewhere improving the team through free agency.

New York Mets' Ace Johan Santana Dazzles in Victory -- Is He Returning to Form?

Johan Santana #57 Of The New York Mets Tips
Photo: Getty Images - Jim McIsaac
- Adam Parker

I'll be honest, I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and watch many baseball games in their entirety so far this season, but when I am able to watch, I try to follow whom I consider to be the dominant pitchers of our era. You know, the Roy Halladays, Cliff Lees, Felix Hernandezs and Justin Verlanders of the world.

Needless to say, after Saturday's performance against the San Diego Padres that was nothing short of pure dominance, I think it's safe to add Mets' ace Johan Santana back into the mix when discussing the elite of the elite of Major League Baseball pitchers.

It was amazing to watch Santana pick apart the Padres -- fast-paced dominance would probably be the best way to describe it.

Like I said above, I normally don't have enough time to watch a baseball game from the first pitch to the last, but this Mets/Padres game was different. The game began and was over in a quick two hours and 18 minutes.

Mike Jenkins and the Dallas Cowboys are Locked in a Stalemate

Photo: US Presswire
- Troy Ballard

It doesn't happen much to the Cowboys, but cornerback Mike Jenkins wants to be traded out of Dallas.

When news rolled onto Jerry Jones' desk that a player wanted to be moved out of Big D, he must have passed out cold. The Cowboys are America's team, and most players clamor to get a shot on such a big stage, but Jenkins is ready to bail.

The former USF corner's wishy-washy play has finally caught up to him, and after Dallas was torched for nearly 250 yards a game through the air last season, the Cowboys made moves to upgrade the secondary.

Following the big cash-out on free agent corner Brandon Carr, and a trade-up in the draft to snag Morris Claiborne, Jenkins saw the writing on the wall -- he was getting bumped down the depth chart.

And Jenkins isn't interested in playing third string, Cowboys or no Cowboys.

Jose Bautista's Stats Improving: Could It Lead to a Blue Jays' Playoff Berth?

Photo: Getty Images/Abelimages
- Adam Parker

After stalling before even getting out of the gates, it appears Toronto Blue Jays star Jose Bautista is finally showing signs of life and reclaiming the pop in his swing that has made him arguably the most feared power hitter in baseball over the last two seasons.

In the first month of the season, Bautista was mired in a prolonged cold streak at the plate. He only managed three home runs, 10 RBIs and a .634 OPS while hitting a deplorable .181.

Not exactly the stats you expect from your main offensive cog and franchise player. Bautista was in an early season, 'still shaking the rust off' slump. Nothing wrong with that. As long as it doesn't go on for too long.

Just ask Albert Pujols.

And thankfully, for the baseball fans of the great city of Toronto, it didn't. April came to a close, and with it, May arrived -- ending Bautista's slump and bringing forth what I like to call Mayflies and Big Flies.

Why do I say that? Well, it's simple, really.

How Important is BenJarvus Green-Ellis to the Cincinnati Bengals?

Photo: Getty Images - Elsa
- Troy Ballard

The Cincinnati Bengals were flirting with danger last season at the running back postion with the oft-fumble prone Cedric Benson floating in and out of relevance throughout the entire year.

As it became evident that Benson was not going to be re-signed, the Bengals' front office decided to take a pass on drafting a rookie back, and instead made a move for a veteran who never fumbles the ball -- BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Green-Ellis has never fumbled the ball in his career. Never. Not once.

Considering that Cincinnati witnessed Benson fumble five-times in two games last season (I suppose oft-fumble prone is an understatement), the team was looking for consistency. That's exactly where Green-Ellis enters the fold.

The Buffalo Bills' Playoff Aspirations Rest Squarely On Ryan Fitzpatrick's Shoulders

Photo: Getty Images - Rick Stewart
- Adam Parker

After executing one of the biggest offseason coup d'etats in recent memory with the acquisition of former Houston Texans All-Pro defensive end/outside linebacker Mario Williams, the Buffalo Bills have plunged their names into the conversation of playoff relevancy.

'Super' Mario, along with fellow free agent signee Mark Anderson, should team with a healthy Kyle Williams and former first-round pick Marcell Dareus to create arguably the best defensive line in football.

The Bills also took steps to upgrade their dismal secondary, adding the second-best cornerback in the draft to the mix in former South Carolina Gamecock Stephon Gilmore.

Besides that, incumbent Buffalo stars -- running back Fred Jackson and wide receiver Stevie Johnson -- also received long-term contract extensions.

That's right folks.

For the first time since 1999, the Bills have compiled a roster that has many pro personnel and fans alike believing that the 2012 season might finally be the year the Bills end their 12-year playoff drought.

The stage is set for the Bills to circle the playoff wagons once again. Now, it all comes down to the play of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Whatever Happens Against the Miami Heat is Irrelevant, the Indiana Pacers' Season was a Success

Photo: NY Daily News
- Troy Ballard

Just a few days ago, the entire world was ready to accept that the Indiana Pacers were going to silence and eliminate the behemoth in South Beach known as the Miami Heat.

Then, over the course of 72-hours, LeBron James turned into well.. LeBron James. Indiana quickly went from having a promising lead in the series to being down one-game and facing elimination.

There have been numerous injuries to both teams, leaving back-ups to fill starting roles in a playoff atmosphere.

Due to the injuries sustained in the series, it has presented multiple interesting scenarios, and due to the added difficulty, players have been throwing some cheap shots to 'get even.' The NBA has suspended both Udonis Haslem and Lance Stephenson for mis-conduct during Game Five, and combined with the injuries, have left both squads incredibly short-handed.

The blunt truth of the situation is that Indiana is totally buried -- the Miami Heat are going to win Game Six and end the series. Most fans will chalk this season up as another let-down and a disappointment.

Here's a reality check for Pacers fans -- this season was a total success.

Plaxico Burress Wants a Tryout With the Miami Dolphins -- The Feeling Isn't Mutual

Photo: Associated Press
- Adam Parker

Oddly enough, the Miami Dolphins are not interested in the services of free agent Plaxico Burress to bolster their lackluster receiving corps.

What?!?

Either 'Fins general manager Jeff Ireland is ignorant, or, in the words of former Cardinals head coach Dennis Green, "He's what I thought he was" in that he's just plain dumb.

After all, if you recall, this is the same guy who asked former 2010 Draft pick Dez Bryant if his mother was a 'working girl.'

Needless to say, Ireland doesn't exactly seem like the sharpest tool in the shed.

Why wouldn't you want to bring in Burress for a workout to see if he still has anything left in the tank?

Unless of course the Dolphins know something I don't. But after looking over their roster, it doesn't exactly look like the most awe-inspiring group.

How the Los Angeles Lakers Have Self-Destructed

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard

I suppose all good things must come to an end -- but never in my wildest dreams had I imagined the collapse of the Los Angeles Lakers to be this swift.

There was an era where the Lake-Show was nothing short of unstoppable, and now, I watch as the team has fallen apart like a group of poorly coached high school kids.

Los Angeles has lost the mental toughness that comes with a Kobe Bryant-led team. It used to be that down 15 on the road -- no problem. Down three with no time left on the clock -- the Lakers still have it. Triple overtime against a younger and more agile team -- LA was right there.

Not anymore.

Brandon Weeden vs. Colt McCoy -- The Browns' Quarterback Battle Is Underway: But Was It Over Before It Even Started?

Photo: US Presswire
- Adam Parker

The battle royale for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback position got underway Tuesday, as the team took the field for the first round of voluntary organized activities.

This has been and will continue to be one of the hottest and most closely contested (and scrutinized) quarterback competitions in recent memory.

The battle between the incumbent Colt McCoy, and the Browns' shiny new toy -- the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and 28-year-old former minor league baseball pitcher Brandon Weeden.

The Browns have assured everyone that it will be an open competition between the two players, but it would be naive and stupid of us to believe that Weeden doesn't have the inside track to win this two-horse race (believe it or not, Seneca Wallace will not be a factor).

Dwight Howard Gets Away With Murder in Orlando: What's Next for the Magic?

Dwight Howard might as well change his name to LeBron James.

The Orlando Magic have announced that both head coach Stan Van Gundy and general manager Otis Smith have been dismissed from the team.

Somewhere, Howard is grinning like a mad man and calling all his buddies bragging about how much clout he has in Orlando.

No, Dwight, that's not clout. Not one bit.

What Howard has managed to do to the Magic organization is something only the most desperate ownership would allow to happen -- giving complete control to a player.

Kellen Winslow Likely Out As Buccaneers' Tight End

Photo: Tampa Bay Times - Daniel Wallace
- Adam Parker

The revolving door in Tampa Bay continues.

First, the new regime led by rookie head coach Greg Schiano showed safety Tanard Jackson the door because of his off-field issues. Then, the team drafted his replacement in former Alabama safety Mark Barron.

Now, Schiano has set his sights on his next target.

After three seasons and 48 games, it appears that the Kellen Winslow era with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is coming to a close.

During an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday morning, Winslow said the team informed him that his services would no longer be required and that they would attempt to trade him.

Apparently, the partial reasoning behind Winslow's untimely departure -- at least according to the team  -- is because of Winslow's absence during offseason workouts with the team.

Does Russel Wilson Have a Shot at Winning the Starting Job With the Seattle Seahawks?

Photo: Seahawks.com
- Troy Ballard

How the tides turn.

Pre-draft, the Seattle Seahawks appeared to be set at quarterback. The team went out and threw money at Matt Flynn signing him to a big deal, all the while Tavaris Jackson was still under contract.

Pete Carroll played coy and said that Flynn would have to win the starting job, and just because the team spent big bucks to sign him, didn't mean he was guaranteed the starting role.

Yeah, sure. We've heard that plenty of times before, and we all know how it ends. Flynn would be the starter and Jackson would slide down the depth chart.

During the draft, Seattle raised some eyebrows by taking Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson in the third-round. Opinions varied on where Wilson was worthy of being drafted, with some yelling reach and others bolding sounding the steal alarm.

Again, Carroll played coy and plead the fifth on why the Seahawks really drafted Wilson -- really just giving the old excuse of needing more depth at the position. Still, it appeared that Flynn had the starting job all but sealed.

Then rookie OTA's kicked-off. Seattle was incredibly impressed with Wilson, and he was far and away the most impressive rookie at the camp. After observing the Wisconsin product carefully, Carroll finally stopped messing around with the media and officially announced that Wilson will be competing for the starting job with Flynn and Jackson.

Albert Pujols Who? -- Carlos Beltran is Helping Cardinals' Fans Forget About the Loss of Big Al

Photo: Associated Press - Jeff Roberson
- Adam Parker

The St. Louis Cardinals currently sit atop the National League Central with a (22-18) record. Though the team is only a mere 1.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds at this point, it's still quite impressive.

After all, did any of us really expect them to perform like this after losing franchise face Albert Pujols to the Los Angeles Angels through free agency? I know I sure didn't, and to be honest, outside of that Cardinals' locker room, anyone who say they could have predicted this is lying.

Sure, the Cards' clearly have enough talent and depth on both the pitching staff and in the lineup to stay above water without Pujols' production, but no one could have predicted that this team could find a way to plug the leak so quickly.

Enter Carlos Beltran, the 35-year-old former Mets' star who signed a two-year, $26 million deal with St. Louis this offseason to 'help fill some of the Pujols-sized void' in the middle of the Cardinals' lineup.

But Beltran has done far more than that. He's proven to be far more than a stop-gap or a quick fix for the defending World Series champs recovering from a Pujols hangover.

The Cardinals are 40 games into the season, and Beltran has proven to be nothing short of a godsend.

No Question: The San Antonio Spurs are the Best in the NBA

Photo: SA Express - Edward Ornelas

Tony Parker. Manu Ginobli. Tim Duncan.

There won't be many alley-oops in San Antonio. Nor will there be many flashy fast-break dunks. Don't count on any crowd-rising displays of pure athleticism. The chances of Terrell Owens-esque steals are between slim and none. There won't be any LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh sightings.

The Spurs are the anti-Heat, and San Antonio is still the best team in the NBA.

It's a question that is undoubtedly lingering in the back of every member of Steeler Nation; like those pesky cobwebs in the corners of your basement.

Can Isaac Redman be 'The Guy' to carry the bulk of the duties for the Steelers' running game in 2012?

He's going to have to be.

Incumbent starter Rashard Mendenhall is likely to begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list while recovering from surgery in January on a torn ACL.

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Kerry Wood To Retire

There you have it, folks.

Another former pitching great is set to take his leave from the game of baseball.

This time, it's Cubs' legend and former rookie phenom Kerry Wood. Yes, I speak of the same Kerry Wood who burst onto the scene with the Cubbies in 1998 after pitching the still unheard of 20-strikeout game -- as a rookie.

But much has happened since then. Wood has struggled mightily to stay healthy and is no longer throwing the same gas that blew opposing batters away earlier in his career.

Wood, realizing that his effectiveness is at an all-time low, has decided to call it quits after his next relief appearance on the mound, which took place on Friday.

NBA Playoffs: Beard and Stache Fact or Fiction Questions for the East and West

Don't Call It A Comeback -- Ahman Green

Don't call it a comeback...

I can hardly believe it either.

Are we talking about the same Ahman Green? The former Green Bay Packers star who spent eight seasons with the Packers followed by two seasons each with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks?

That guy wants to make a comeback to the NFL?

Give me a break.

Green officially retired from the NFL in 2011, but he refuses to call it quits. Instead, at age 35, Green has announced his plans to return to the NFL and more importantly (or at least hopefully for his sake) -- to the Packers.

You've got to be kidding me.

What a joke.

NFL Free Agency: Is Plaxico Burress Really Going to be Jobless?

Photo: AP Images
- Troy Ballard

This is an eyebrow raiser -- for those who haven't been keeping tabs, New York Jet wide receiver Plaxico Burress is an unrestricted free agent, and still has yet to be signed by an NFL team.

There were rumors out the wazoo early on that the Philadelphia Eagles would sign Burress and reunite him with long-time childhood friend and former jailbird Michael Vick, but talks fell-through and nothing ended up happening.

At one point it seemed a possibility for Burress to return to the Jets as well, but following the draft where New York selected Stephen Hill and Jordan White, his return seems incredibly improbable.

It then begs the question, has Burress become the next Terrell Owens?

NBA Playoffs: Beard and Stache Fact or Fiction Questions for the East and West

Photo: Getty Images
- Troy Ballard and Adam Parker

Cya Denver, Utah, Memphis, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Orlando and New York!

The NBA Playoffs are a gauntlet filled with hard fouls, enough emotional intensity to fill a sorority, clutch shots, lights-out performances, men are separated from boys, and the greats can make their mark on history.

However, of the same tune, the NBA Playoffs can be a disaster with players under-achieving in the clutch (LeBron), teams unraveling at the seams, prowess being tested, and the inevitably worst case scenario -- the sweep.

The second-round has narrowed the race to the Finals down to eight teams -- Heat, Sixers, Celtics, Pacers, Lakers, Thunder, Spurs and Clippers -- and Troy and Adam have taken the liberty of breaking down both the West and the East in the newest fact or fiction piece!

Enjoy!

East

#10. Evan Turner is the new star of the Philadelphia 76ers

Troy: FACT - Iggy may still get the star recognition in Philadelphia, but Evan Turner is the man. Given his struggles as a rookie, he has come up huge in his sophomore season, especially in the playoffs. This kid has iced three games alone this postseason, and by next season, he could be an All-Star.

Adam: FACT - This kid did it all at Ohio State. He was the offense. He did have a rough rookie campaign and had trouble cracking the rotation, but he's rebounded nicely in his sophomore season and become arguably the team's best player. What a difference a year makes. The Villain has arrived.

#9. The Philly vs. Boston series will go seven games

Troy: FICTION - Boston is both too old and too good to go seven games against a young Sixers team. The Celtics will either fall apart from fatigue or run Philly right out of the series early on. It will be one of those two scenarios, and it will happen long before seven games.

Adam: FICTION - Every series theoretically has the potential to go seven games. This won't be one of those times. Six games at the most. One of these teams will get the upper hand before long. Right now, they're just kind of feeling each other out.

#8. If the Celtics do advance, it will be because of Rajon Rondo (Grand Theft Rondo)

Troy: FACT - As much as I love the Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, they are not going to be the ones responsible for any kind of deep playoff run. Rajon Rondo has been working overtime all season as a walking triple-double, and frankly, he's the only reason the Celtics haven't been eliminated yet.

Adam: FICTION - Rondo is great, no doubt. But in order for him to be great, his teammates -- most notably Boston's Big Three -- have to hit shots. Rondo will be a contributing factor, but he's not an all-world scorer who can be relied upon to carry the Lion's share of the scoring duties. The fate of the Celtics rests on the shoulders of the Big Three.

Andy Reid Still Has Donovan McNabb's Back, But is There Still a Market for the Veteran QB?

Photo: Getty Images - Al Bello

Andy, you're just such a class act.

During an interview with NFL Network, Reid was grilled about everything from his total failure last season in Philadelphia to his favorite type of food. However, like clockwork, the topic that Reid has been asked about countless times over the past decade reared its head yet again -- Donovan McNabb.

The question essentially asked if it would be a good move for any team in the NFL to sign McNabb, despite the fact that he has been out of the game, with his age as a concern and that his last performance in Minnesota was abysmal and poor.

Reid took the chance to show McNabb some love, and also make a push for him to be signed, dropping this in return to the question -- "I still think he can play. I think the world of him, and we had some great years together here. I'm always wishing him the best and a fan of his. I got a chance to see him at Brian Dawkins' retirement, he looks good. He looks physically good. He looks like he could go out and play tomorrow. I would highly recommend it."

Andy, Andy, Andy.

The Miami Heat are Bosh-Less -- What Now?

Photo: Getty Images - Chris Graythan
- Troy Ballard

We have all partaken at least once in the Chris Bosh joke-fest, but now, the Miami Heat are the last ones looking for a laugh.

Chris-Chris left the Heat's first game throw-down early against the Indiana Pacers and didn't return in what was later revealed as an abdominal strain. The injury will have the Third King sidelined for likely the remainder of this series against the Pacers, and possibly even beyond that.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are sweating bullets.

Maybe not quite, as both Wade and James were able to explode in the second half of Game 1 against Indiana and carry the Heat to a 1-0 lead in the series.

But even if Wade and James continue to dominate for the remainder of this series against a relatively unproven Pacers team, how far will Miami go without Bosh on the floor?

That one was a classic. Though, admittedly, the honeymoon phase didn't last too long there, and overall, it was a rather tumultuous union.

But something tells me that the pairing of former Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd with the Arizona Cardinals -- and more importantly, franchise face Larry Fitzgerald -- will prove to be the perfect relationship in the not so distant future.

The Cardinals got lucky landing this kid at No. 13, and no one was likely happier than Floyd, except maybe new teammate Fitz, that the former Fighting Irish star was taking his talents to the desert.

LeBron James Wins MVP

Photo: nba.com
- Adam Parker

Yep, he's done it again, folks. This time, in Miami.

LeBron James is once again the NBA's Most Valuable Player.

This is LeBron's third MVP award in the last four seasons (2011 award was won by Chicago Bulls' point guard Derrick Rose) and it now cements the 27-year-old James' name alongside some of the all-time greats.

Only seven other players -- Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Moses Malone , Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and "His Airness" Michael Jordan -- have at least three MVP trophies.

A source close to James confirmed to ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst that the Heat star won the award.

James was announced Saturday as this year's winner of the league's highest individual honor, and he will be formally presented with the trophy by commissioner David Stern before Sunday's Game 1 Easter Conference Semifinals matchup against the Indiana Pacers.

Talk about adding more fuel to an already unfathomably large fire.

Could Donald Driver Be On The Outs In Green Bay?

Donald Driver

It's a hypothetical that most 'Cheeseheads' out there don't even want to consider.

But not just them. No, the potential of seeing a Green Bay Packers team take the field without Donald Driver is borderline blasphemy in many fans' minds around the NFL.

Rightfully so.

Driver has been a staple of the Pack Attack his entire 13-year career after being drafted by the team in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Alcorn State.

He's been a fan favorite in one of the greatest football towns in the nation for over a decade, playing 192 games, primarily catching passes from fellow Packer greats Brett Favre and now Aaron Rodgers.

But Driver's days with Green Bay are likely numbered.

The Houston Astros Are Quietly Making Waves

The Houston Astros.

The team many consider to be the National League equivalent to the Baltimore Orioles aka the predominant doormat teams of baseball.

But the 2012 season is proving to a turnaround year for both clubs.

The only difference is, unlike the Astros, you're hearing about the Orioles. Their sizzling (insert up-to-date O's record here) start has taken them from being the perennial American League East punching bag to baseball's most surprising team.

To put it plainly, the Orioles are this year's feel-good Cinderella story. They're the talk of the Ball, or rather, they're the hot topic around water coolers everywhere.

But what about the Astros? Why is no one talking about them? Why is no one coming out to sing their praises?

Tennessee Titans Quarterback Jake Locker Is Tired of Holding Clipboard - Wants to Start in 2012

It's a new era for rookie quarterbacks.

Gone are the days when NFL teams drafted quarterbacks in the first round only to have them stand on the sideline holding a clipboard and 'learning by watching' ala Aaron Rodgers.

It's 2012.

Nowadays, if a quarterback is taken in the first round, it's because the team drafting him not only is in dire need of a franchise quarterback, but the young gunslinger selected is almost always expected to come in, take the reigns and command the huddle like a 10-year veteran.

Titans' second-year quarterback Jake Locker was drafted with the eighth overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, and Tennessee went against the grain by bringing in veteran Matt Hasselbeck, who not only tutored Locker, but also started all 16 games of Locker's rookie season.

All the while, Locker looked on and learned from the 36-year-old veteran. But this year, he's not holding back. Locker wants the starting job, and he aims to take it.

Are There Any Los Angeles Lakers Who Want to Help Kobe Bryant?

Photo: Zimbio.com
- Troy Ballard

Does anyone else ever get the feeling when watching the Los Angeles Lakers that Kobe Bryant is the only player on the court that is trying to win games?

The rest of the team just kind of just.. doesn't play.

This is very much the case in the Lakers' latest playoff series against the Denver Nuggets. LA has had multiple chances to close the door and advance past this rocky first-round, and each time, the team blows it.

In the latest game, Bryant dropped a staggering Carmelo-LeBron-Durant-esque 43 points. That's nearly half of the Lakers' 99 total points. That's more than most players score in a full week of games. That's more points that any player should need to score to win -- or lose.

We all know that the Mamba is going to dominate, that's just a given -- the guy lives for playoff basketball -- but he can't be the only one. This one superstar thing only gets teams so far, and eventually, the reliance on one player will come back and kill the team in a deep playoff series.

It's just the facts. So, which Laker wants to step up and help out Kobe?

2012 Will Be a Pivotal Season for St. Louis Rams' Quarterback Sam Bradford

Photo: stlouisrams.com
- Adam Parker

We all know the story.

Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford was the first overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.

He was far and away the best quarterback prospect in his class, and the only other quarterback even taken in the first round that year was Tim Tebow at No. 25 overall to the Denver Broncos.

Three seasons are in the books and Tebow-mania has packed up his suitcase and made the move from Mile High to the Big Apple as the Jets' backup quarterback. This happened after the Broncos landed some guy who threw passes for the Colts for the last decade and a half.

Unlike Tebow, Bradford is still in St. Louis. And he's still the Rams' starting quarterback heading into the 2012 season.

That being said, if Bradford expects to remain that way, he needs to make substantial strides in the upcoming season.

Best and Worst Case Scenarios for Cleveland Browns Rookie QB Brandon Weeden

Photo: AP Images
- Troy Ballard

The Cleveland Browns took a big gamble at No. 22 in the NFL Draft by selecting former Oklahoma State stand-out quarterback Brandon Weeden -- and the team is hoping for the jackpot.

It's not that Weeden doesn't possess the skill set needed to play at the next level, because he most certainly does, it's the fact that he's 28-years-old.

Drafting a player older than 22 in the first-round of the draft is almost unheard of, and drafting a player over 25 at all in the draft is incredibly rare.

Weeden is a unique prospect.

The Browns have entered a situation where Weeden is too old to sit on the bench and mature, but the question is still up in the air as to whether or not he can succeed in the NFL.

Presumably, due to Colt McCoy's struggles, Weeden will be handed the starting job. Giving him the starting role only makes sense, due to his age, his draft selection, and McCoy's inconsistencies as a starter.

Saying that Weeden does get that starting job, what are the best and worst case scenarios for him as a rookie next season?

Is Justin Blackmon the Final Piece to the Jacksonville Jaguars' Puzzle?

Photo: Bob Mack/The Times-Union
- Adam Parker

If you happened to catch any Jacksonville Jaguars football last season (assuming of course, that the games weren't blacked out in your area), you noticed a common theme every time the Jags' took the field -- the championship-caliber defense was being held back by the lackluster offense.

Sure, you have 2011 rushing champion Maurice Jones-Drew at the forefront, but when teams start stacking eight and sometimes even nine guys in the box, you know there must be something wrong.

To put it plainly, no one around the NFL lost any sleep over Jacksonville's passing game (or more realistically, lack there of) and likely had a relatively simple defensive gameplan coming in against the Jaguars -- stop MJD, because if you stop MJD, the bulk of the pressure will fall on rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

That proved to be a recipe for success for most Jaguars' opponents, as the former Missouri star just couldn't hack it during his rookie campaign.

The Jaguars hope that's all about to change with the addition of first-round pick and former two-time Biletnikoff award winner Justin Blackmon.

The Fallout From Cole Hamels Intentionally Aiming at Bryce Harper

Photo: AP Images - Richard Lipski
- Troy Ballard

Cole, Cole, Cole -- what are you thinking, buddy?

Almost every baseball fan on the face of the planet has heard the news that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels intentionally hit Washington Nationals rookie sensation Bryce Harper with a pitch.

It was up in the air as to whether or not it was an intentional move after it happened (you can watch it here), but Hamels cleared up any doubt following the game, dropping this gem to reporters, "I was trying to hit him. I'm not going to deny it. In other words it's just, 'Welcome to the big leagues.'"

Harper, who easily could have bashed Hamels, decided to take the high road, and when asked about it after the game plainly said, "Hamels threw a great game tonight."

Philadelphia would go onto win the game 9-3 to avoid a sweep by the Nats', but that was hardly even noticeable with the large cloud hanging over the Hamels and Harper situation.

Deliberate. Intentional. With malice (perhaps). And no question, the most unintelligent thing Hamels has ever done and said in his career. What's the realistic fallout from his intentional shot at Harper?

Are the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays Rising in the AL East?

Photo: Getty Images/Greg Fiume
- Adam Parker

I'm right there with you.

I'm having trouble believing it, too. But believe it, because its happening before our eyes.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles are currently at the top of the usually New York and Boston-dominated American League East.

Both teams have been considered underdogs in the division, and in the Orioles' case -- bottom feeders. But that doesn't change the fact that both squads seem to have found a winning formula and are getting it done with just over a fifth of the grueling 162-game schedule in the books.

How is it that the Rays and Orioles -- teams with historically low bankrolls -- are not only hanging with the big boys, but grinding out enough victories to be leading the charge?

What's Next for Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks?

Photo: US Presswire
- Troy Ballard

At least we'll always have '11.

That seems to be the tune in Dallas following the defending champion Mavericks getting bounced out of the first-round of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite all four games coming down to the wire, the Mavs' were just out-hustled, outplayed, and were frankly -- just too old.

Dirk Nowitzki was his usual amazing self, but not even the magic that he pulled last year could save Dallas. The Thunder were dominant, especially in the fourth quarters, where it was obvious that young legs helped propel the team to wins.

It is clear, after the team was swept in the first-round as defending champs, Dallas has to make changes.

NFL Off-Season: Fact or Fiction Questions for the NFC and AFC

Photo: Getty Images - Drew Hallowell
- Troy Ballard and Adam Parker

Is it August yet?

One thing is certain in a sea of questions coming into the upcoming NFL season -- we want football. The Super Bowl between the Patriots and Giants was a good send-off, but the withdrawal of not seeing electrifying runs and jaw-dropping interceptions is starting to kick in.

So, we here at Beard and Stache are going to give you a quick NFL fix to tide you over until the pre-season! We did our best to balance it out and cover a wide range of topics, but feel free to comment with any other questions you may have for us! Or, if you totally disagree, we'd love to hear your feedback!

Enjoy!

NFC

#10. Matt Flynn Will Succeed With the Seattle Seahawks

Troy: FACT - Analysts and fans have been really rough on Matt Flynn, and as a whole, there isn't much belief that he can succeed outside of the Packers' system. I think differently, and with the ever-dominating Marshawn Lynch providing support in the backfield, Flynn could take the NFC West by storm.

Adam: FICTION They're no doubt paying him like they expect him to succeed. However, the talent discrepancy -- at least in the passing game -- between Flynn's former team (Green Bay) and Flynn's new team is off the charts. Will the oft-injured Sidney Rice and undrafted Doug Baldwin offer enough weapons for Flynn to succeed? Somehow, I doubt it.

#9. Michael Vick Will Take a Step Forward

Troy: FACT - Michael Vick sucked last season. He was careless with the ball, he scrambled more than he needed to, and his accuracy as a whole was totally off-line. But with a full off-season to work with, I fully expect Vick to come back guns-blazing and look more or less like his 2010 form.

Adam: FICTION - This really has nothing to with Michael Vick and everything to do with the loss of Jason Peters on the offensive line. Vick could still be great, but Philadelphia is going to have to use some  gum and duct tape to repair the makeshift offensive line to give Vick time to do what he does best.

#8. The Green Bay Packers Will Win the NFC North

Troy: FICTION - It's always hard to bet against a team that only had one-loss in 2012, but that playoff loss to the Giants was flat out nasty. New York was able to expose every weakness that Green Bay had, and count on it -- the Chicago Bears were taking notes.

Adam: FACT - The Pack-Attack led by Aaron Rodgers is one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL, even without the support of a running game. The Bears will be the biggest threat with the return of a healthy Jay Cutler and Matt Forte to add to new receiving weapons Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. The battles at Lambeau and Soldier Field will be something to watch, but ultimately, I feel like A-Rod and co. are just too strong.

New York Yankees' Closer Mariano Rivera Has Torn ACL

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. I know. Shocking, isn't it?

But the Yankees don't care.

The team's primary focus is on closer Mariano Rivera, whose incomparable career could be over after suffering a torn ACL and torn meniscus in his right knee while tracking a fly ball during pre-game batting practice for the Yankees at Kauffman Stadium.

According to team captain Derek Jeter, this was something Rivera, 42, has done for as long as he's known him (18 seasons as teammates in New York) and it was just a freak accident.

Two big questions immediately sprang to mind when I saw Mo' being lifted by manager Joe Girardi and another coach onto a cart before being taken off the field: Who will step in as the closer now? Is this truly the last we've seen of the future first ballot Hall of Famer?

Baltimore Ravens' Star Terrell Suggs Tears Achilles'

Photo: Getty Images/Patrick McDermott
- Adam Parker

Next to seeing 'Land Shark' Ray Lewis or the ballhawking Ed Reed go down with an injury, this is the last thing the Baltimore Ravens wanted to see.

Opposing quarterbacks can sleep a little more soundly during the upcoming season.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs is likely to miss the entire 2012 season after tearing his Achilles' during a routine workout at his old high school.

This is a terrible loss for Baltimore. No offense to Lewis or Reed, but Suggs was arguably the best player on that defense at this stage of the three players' respective careers.

He wreaked havoc in his hybrid linebacker-end position last season, and for me personally as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan -- T-Sizzle was easily quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's worst nightmare.

Can the Ravens' defense still be great in 2012?

Five Changes EA Sports Needs to Make in Madden 13

Photo: CBS Detroit
- Troy Ballard

At some point or another, we have all said, 'if EA Sports doesn't make improvements to next year's Madden, I'm not buying it.' Then like clockwork, we are guilty as sin of running out and buying the newest installment, just because we can't live without it, tossing any previous declarations to the side.

But this year, it's different, (we've heard this before, I know).

I have a sneaking feeling that we are all just about sick to our stomaches about having to play another Madden that not only is totally below our level of satisfaction, but also is completely broken!

It's like buying a brand new car off the lot, but it has all of the same problems at that '83 Chevy Impala -- broken air conditioner and all -- the only difference is the look of the damn thing!

In an effort to avoid buying a slightly more appealing '83 Impala, here are five improvements that must be made to Madden 13:

#5. Improve Weather Dynamics!

Forgive me, I forgot that Pittsburgh is the rainest city in America.

For some reason, some ungodly reason, it rains like crazy whenever a franchise game is being played. It doesn't matter the location, the time, the month, whatever -- it just rains and rains and rains. Then, when users turn weather off, the reality of playing with no weather starts to really suck.

EA Sports, just balance out the rain. Thanks.

#4. Tight Ends Are Not That Good!

The ultimate cheese in Madden -- tight ends. It doesn't matter if the user is playing with Jermichael Finely or Cornelius Ingram, all tight ends in Madden play the same. They. Can't. Be. Covered.

The tipping-point for me was a ranked match online against the Green Bay Packers -- Finley: 14 catches,  140 yards, three touchdowns.

I'm done with the tight end B.S.

There's a New Sheriff In Town -- Knicks' Tyson Chandler Wins Defensive Player of the Year

Photo: AP Images
- Adam Parker

The New York Knicks are facing a 2-0 deficit against the Miami Heat in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Amare Stoudemire's frustration fight with a fire extinguisher case that led to an injury which could cost him the rest of the series doesn't help matters.

Carmelo Anthony is going to need to give a Herculean effort for the remainder of the series if the Knicks are to have any chance.

But even if the Knicks don't succeed as a team, you have to give another pivotal piece in their puzzle some props -- defensive maestro Tyson Chandler.

The Knicks' center has been voted the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, ending the three-year reign of that guy down in Orlando.
